THE DECEMBERISTS ARE PLAYING TWO NIGHTS IN A ROW IN BOSTON IN NOVEMBER! it is at my least favorite venue (the orpheum) BUT IT IS TWO NIGHTS! the first night is going to be comprised of all their longer, epic songs, and the second night is the shorter, poppier stuff. CANNOT WAIT.
i am toying with the idea of going to new york to see them as well, since i believe they're playing a general admission venue there, while boston's shows are seated.
I KINDA REALLY NEED ONE OF THESE:
i also need to join a band already. i bet i could totally hold my own in the "girl keyboard/xylophone/tambourine player" role.
i love love love wilco.
for my media, culture, and society class, i am doing a project on the impact blogs have on our culture. as part of the project, i have to "interview" at least ten people. due to time restrictions and such, i am expanding this to include livejournal users, since hey, these are kind of blogs too! if you could take a few minutes to briefly answer the following questions, i would really appreciate it!
1. Define what "culture" category blogs fit into (ex: popular culture, high culture, mass culture, etc.)
2. What are the cultural origins/history of blogs?
3. What demographic group typically reads your blog and why? Has this demographic shifted over time?
4. What social, economic, and cultural factors do you think determine the above demographics?
5. How have blogs evolved over time?
6. What has been the impact of technology on blogs?
7. What motivates you to maintain your blog/What do you get out of having a blog?
8. Do you try to recruit others to participate in this medium? If so, how (word of mouth, print, visual material, etc.)?
9. What moderates the frequency of attendance by your readers?
give me your favorite websites! at my library job i am spending 12 hours per week behind a computer with almost nothing to do, so please, please, please help me out!
i just got a job at the library here at my school.
in an email i asked "when should i start?" they replied "wednesday, at 7pm."
i have a third row ticket to see andrew bird on wednesday that cost me $37.55. i've never gotten to see him live before.
Congratulations on choosing to play accordion..it is super fun. When you are looking for an accordion I would recommend getting a smaller one. The one's I play are not full size (full size usually has 120 bass buttons). If you are just beginning you won't be needing all those bass notes and it makes it heavy. I like italian accordions because they tend to be small. Make sure the bellow don't leak (if you have no buttons or keys held down the bellows should't move, and you should hear no air leakng). Make sure it is in tune..mabye take an acoustic tuner with you when you shop. Good-luck..let me know how you fare...
JENNY IS THE ACCORDION PLAYER IN THE DECEMBERISTS, FYI.
this looked like fun so i stole it from stefaniesays :
List 10 musical artists you like, in no specific order (do this before reading the questions below)
2. belle & sebastian
3. elliott smith
4. the beatles
5. the decemberists
8. the zombies
9. the shins
10. neutral milk hotel
What was the first song you ever heard by 6? [pixies]
What is your favorite song of 8? [the zombies]
"care of cell 44," hands down. i think it must be one of the best pop songs ever written.
What kind of impact has 1 left on your life? [weezer]
i doubt any other band will ever have the impact that weezer has had on me. they were my "gateway band" and eventually led me to everything i listen to now. sometimes i wonder if music would even be My Thing if it weren't for weezer. i connected with them in a way that had i had never experienced with a band before, and they launched me into the world of music with an insatiable hunger to find more and more bands that i hadn't yet been exposed to.
What is your favorite lyric of 5? [the decemberists]
i refuse to pick just one, so here are a few:
and i am nothing of a builder
but here i dreamt i was an architect
and i built this balustrade
to keep you home, to keep you safe
from the outside world
but the angles and the corners
(even though my work is unparalleled)
they never seem to meet
this structure fell about our feet
and we were free to go
oh, adhere to me for we are bound by symmetry
and whatever differences our lives have been
we together make a limb
How many times have you seen 4 live? [the beatles]
oh, i see them just about every week.
What is your favorite song by 7? [pavement]
"in the mouth a desert"
Is there any song by 3 that makes you sad? [elliott smith]
HI THIS IS WHAT I PUT ON WHEN I AM FEELING DEPRESSED AND JUST WANT TO LISTEN TO MUSIC ALONE IN THE DARK WITH MY HEADPHONES ON. so, yes.
What is your favorite song by 9? [the shins]
i hate to choose "new slang" but i'd be kidding myself if i didn't.
When did you first get into 2? [belle & sebastian]
i bought if you're feeling sinister back in tenth grade, but didn't get into the band much more than that until i saw them two nights in a row last february. after those two shows, i REALLY got into them. like, to the point of obsession.
How did you get into 3? [elliott smith]
when i was first really getting into music, i downloaded a ton of random stuff from bands i had heard good things about. elliott smith was one such download. "miss misery" got me hooked.
What is your favorite song by 4? [the beatles]
"a day in the life"
How many times have you seen 9 live... [the shins]
twice. the first time i saw them it was my first real concert, and it was such a great experience for me.
What is a good memory concerning 2? [belle & sebastian]
february 27-28, 2006: two back-to-back nights of belle & sebastian at a general admission venue. the new pornographers were opening. i was front row both nights, and on night one, i was more excited about the new pornographers than b&s. i recall being disappointed once the new pornographers left the stage and thinking "it's too bad they weren't on last, since the show has to go down from here." by the end of belle & sebastian's second song ("another sunny day"), i was completely and utterly in love.
Is there a song by 8 that makes you sad? [the zombies]
What is your favorite song of 1? [weezer]
How did you become a fan of 10? [neutral milk hotel]
i heard "naomi" on the "indie pop rocks" station on itunes back around the end of tenth grade, i think, and promptly went out and purchased in the aeroplane over the sea.
i have begun practicing guitar again! by next fall i hope to be back to at least the level of proficiency i was at during my peak (junior year of high school).
also, i have decided i absolutely have to learn to play the accordion. starting in seventh grade i sort of fell into a pattern of learning a new instrument approximately every 1.5 years, so i'm long overdue for a new one. i wish there were some sort of place i could go to just mess about on various instruments because i have a bunch left that i want to learn, but there's no way i can afford to buy them all.
comment and i'll give you a letter. in your journal, list your ten favorite songs that begin with the letter that i give you...
sbratus gave me the letter "g"
1. belle & sebastian - "get me away from here, i'm dying"
2. the beach boys - "god only knows"
3. weezer - "the good life"
4. pixies - "gigantic"
5. the beach boys - "good vibrations"
6. the shins - "girl inform me"
7. beulah - "gravity's bringing us down"
8. the beatles - "got to get you into my life"

5/4 - ted leo and the pharmacists
5/9 - benjamin folds
5/10 - ARCADE FIRE ALSKDJASKL I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY'RE FINALLY COMING HERE
basically all my favorite bands that are currently together, minus belle & sebastian, are coming to boston in the next few months.
oh hey peter bjorn & john,
WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING PLAYING IN BOSTON ON THE SAME NIGHT AS TED LEO???????
THIS WAS IN MY ROOM LAST NIGHT:
IT IS A CENTIPEDE.
i may or may not have screamed upon seeing it.
and i may or may not have sat with my feet up on my desk chair for approximately two hours because i was scared of it crawling on me.
i just heard something move. i hope it's not back to attack me.
the new shins album has finally grown on me.
(no snarky comments about it just coming out last week, please. it leaked in like october.)
because i have way too much fun making lists, here are my ten favorite albums of all time:
1. weezer - pinkerton
this and the blue album seriously changed my life. if i hadn't come across weezer back in the day, i wonder if i would be the music fanatic i am now. because really, everything i listen to has branched off from them. would i even be a music major? probably not. would i have learned guitar? probably not. and what i would i be without my musicness? i can't even imagine.
2. pixies - doolittle
this album blew me away from the opening notes of "debaser." i remember going out and immediately buying surfer rosa after hearing this album.
3. the zombies - odessey and oracle
best. melodies. ever.
4. elliott smith - either/or
i remember buying this on vinyl along with "sumday" and "pig lib" at the virgin megastore when i went to see the shins in new york. successful record buying day. i've heard this album so many times, but every time i put it on i just can't believe how good it is.
5. the beatles - abbey road
whenever i go home my parents listen to this with me during car rides. my parents totally could have turned me into one of those beatles-obsessed kids but they blew it by just having this compilation of singles from '62-'66. way to go, parents.
6. weezer - the blue album
so weezer is on this list twice. deal with it. because it wouldn't truly be my top ten without both pinkerton and the blue album. weezer was my life during high school. which is really sad, but whatever.
7. radiohead - ok computer
i just started listening to radiohead this past summer, and i don't know what took me so long.
8. built to spill - there's nothing wrong with love
"car" = perfection
9. the shins - oh, inverted world
i still love them, despite everything garden state did to my band.
10. the decemberists - castaways and cutouts
for a long time i thought this was my least favorite decemberists album (this was pre-crane wife, mind you!). sometimes i am just irrational.
neon bible just leaked in its entirety. it's everything i was hoping for. this is looking to be such a stellar year in music.
the decemberists are playing TWO BACK TO BACK NIGHTS IN BOSTON in march. i am FREAKING OUT.
AND THEY'RE PLAYING AT A SMALLER VENUE THAN THEY DID IN NOVEMBER! THE SAME PLACE AS THEIR PICARESQUE DAYS!!!
i made a bit of a scene at work upon hearing this news.
i am now the music director at my school's radio station!
i might be addressing some envelopes to myself now at my co-op job.
